Zahra Moussavi, Ph.D.

Azadeh Yadollahi, M.Sc.

Azadeh received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Sharif University of Technology, Tehran in 2001 and 2005, respectively. She was a visiting researcher at our lab during her Master Studies for 4 months and worked on respiratory flow estimation and heart sound localization using entropy of respiratory sounds. She is now a Ph.D. candidate in our department continuing her studies in sleep apnea detection - upper airway modeling.

 

Saif Huq, B.Sc.

Saif Huq received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering (2007) from the University of Manitoba. He is now working toward his M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering with focus on airflow phase detection in a noisy environment and during sleep using only one channel of respiratory sounds data.

 

Manju Balachander, B.Sc.

Manju received her B.Sc. from Jawaharal Nehru Technological University (Hyderabad, India) in 2001. She is currently working toward M.Eng degree on designing a reliable and fast data transmission protocol as well as designing the user interface for the sleep apnea portable device.

 

Samaneh Sarraf, B.Sc.

Samaneh has received her B.Sc.(03) and M.Sc. (04) from Amir Kabir University of Technology (Tehran) in Electrical Engineering focused on Neurofuzzy Controllers. She is now a Ph.D. candidate at the U of Manitoba in Biomedical Engineering. Her thesis is mainly on swallowing sounds modeling and analysis.

Ali Azarbarzin, M.Sc.

Ali received his B.Sc. in Electronics from Gilan University, Iran, and his M.Sc. in Electronics from Sharif University of Technology, Iran. Ali has worked in industry performing image processing, radar signal processing, and FPGA based designs. He is currently working towards his Ph.D. analyzing EEG signals and trying to localize epileptic seizures using EEG source localization techniques.

Ali-Akbar Samadani, B.Sc.

Ali-Akbar received his B.Sc degree in Electrical Engineering from Kuwait University in 2006. He is currently working towards his M.Sc at University of Manitoba. His research focuses on studying human behavior using a robotic manipulator (Manipulandum) that mimics human motor learning and the formation of an internal model during arm reaching movements.

Aimee Betker, Ph.D.

Aimee received her B.Sc. (2002), M.Sc. (2004), and Ph.D. (2008) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Manitoba. Dissertation title: "Modern Clinical Tools for Interactive Rehabilitation Exercises, Skill Development, and Treating Balance Problems." Aimee was a recipient of the Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC) award (2004-2006) and NSERC (2006-2008).

Jungmok Han, M.Sc.

Jung received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Manitoba. He finished his M.Sc. in 2007. Thesis title: Human Postural control characteristics during forward stepping: relationship between COM and body accelerations, trunk acceleration variability and COP characteristics.

 

January Gnitecki, Ph.D.

January Gnitecki received her B.Sc. and Ph.D. from University of Manitoba in 2002 an d2007 respectively. Thesis Title: "Analysis and Modeling of Air Flow-Specific Lung Sounds for Non-Invasive Detection of Airway Status." January was a recipient of Canadian Asthma Foundation Studentship (2003), University of Manitoba Fellowship (2004) and NSERC (2004-07).

Mohammad Aboofazeli, Ph.D.

Mohammad received his B.Sc. M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Sharfi University, Amir Kabir University of Iran, and University of Manitoba respectively. His Ph.D. thesis was on swallowing sound analysis.

 

 

Chad MacDonald, M.Sc.

Chad received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Computer Engineering from the University of Manitoba. His M.Sc. thesis was designing and implementing a 2DOF robotic arm for motor learning investigations. He is now continuing obtain his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at El Paso working on robotic.

 

Marziye Golabbakhash, M.Sc.

Marziye received her B.Sc. from Isfahan University of Technology (IUT) of Iran, in 2001 and her M.Sc. on May 2005. Her Master thesis was on acoustical airflow estimation from tracheal breath sounds.

Fazel Farahmand, M.Sc.

Fazel received his B.Sc. from Iran University of Science and Technology in 2001 and M.Sc. in May 2005. He developed a 5-DOF robotic arm with stereo vision as an assistive aid. His multiple perspective object detection method has been filed for patent. Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of British Colombia.

 

Mahsa Pourazad, M.Sc.

Mahsa received her B.Sc. from Iran University of Science and Technology in 2001 and her M.Sc. from our department in Electrical Engineering in 2004. Her Master project was on heart sound cancellation from lung sounds record using image and signal processing techniques and 2D interpolation in time-frequency domain. She is now a Ph.D. candidate at the University of British Colombia.

Irina Hossain, M.Sc.

Irina received her B.Sc. degree in electrical and electronic Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in June, 2000 and her M.Sc. from our department, in 2004. Her project was on lung sound-flow relationship in healthy and asthmatic subjects. Irina was a recipient of University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (2002). She is now a Ph.D. candidate at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI working on Secure Software Update in Intelligent Vehicles.

Lisa Lazareck, M.Sc.


Lisa graduated with her B.Sc and M.Sc in Electrical Engineering from our department in May 2001 and Sept. 2003, respectively. Her Master thesis was in classification between normal and dysphagic swallowing by acoustical means. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Oxford University, UK. Lisa has been a recipient of NSERC Graduate Fellowship.

YeeLeng Yap, M.Sc.

YeeLeng (Daniel) worked on acoustical airflow estimation from tracheal sound average power and graduated in August 2002. 


Ed Shwedyk, Ph.D.

Senior Scholar and retired Professor Ed Shwedyk has been the first researcher in Biomedical Engineering in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Manitoba since 1975 and established this lab in 1982. He has been involved in many biomedical projects such as EMG processing for prosthetic control purposes and upper limb movement studies.

Archie Cooper, Ph.D.

Professor Archie Cooper is the director of the School of Medical Rehabilitation, University of Manitoba. Her main research interests are: enhancement of return to work strategies by physicians, prevention of disability in back-injured workers, functional upper limb kinematics and kinetics and Occupational performance.

 

Hans Pasterkamp, MD., FRCPC

Professor Hans Pasterkamp is the head of Section of Respirology of the department of Pediatrics and Child Health. His main research area is Respiratory Acoustics.

 

Gina Rempel, MD., FRCPC

Dr. Gina Rempel is an Associate Professor at the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba. Her main research area is assessment of the swallowing mechanism in normals and patients with swallowing disorder.

 

Tony Szturm Ph.D.

Dr. Tony Szturm is an Associate Professor at the School of Medical Rehabilitation, University of Manitoba. His main research area is Postural Control and Locomotion in health and disease.
